IBL allows quickly to create quality lighting, without taking pains over picking out and positioning the light sources. When using it, it is necessary to include in the drawing at least one regular black light source (e.g. Head Light). It will not participate in rendering, but will help avoid insertion of default light sources.
Yes, but it is necessary to keep in mind that this reduces the share of the photo realistic IBL source because of the regular sources.
The easiest method is to create a background of Image type. For the file, you will need to specify your HDRI file. Although the list of extensions for backgrounds does not include *.exr and *.hdr formats, files with these extensions can be used for background.
Yes, but this requires additional memory resources, and will significantly slow down rendering. Besides, the results will be the same as when using the regular LDRI. It is much easier to convert HDRI to jpeg and use it as a regular image.
To activate shadows, you will need to make the following settings for "simple environment": "Shadow resolution" = 0 and "Shadow Type" = "HARD". Then shadows can be made arbitrarily soft. Softness and photo realistic qualities are controlled by "Number of samples" parameter. The larger it is, the larger the number of light sources into which the environment is broken. It takes longer to calculate the scene, but it turns out more realistic. Files Samples40 and Samples1500 demonstrate the results of rendering with "Number of samples" = 40 and 1500, respectively.
